With cool precision, in language that shimmers with rage and wit and fierce longing, Jenny Offill has crafted an exquisitely suspenseful love story that has the velocity of a train hurtling through the night at top speed. She muses on the consuming, capacious experience of maternal love, and the near total destruction of the self that ensues from it, as she confronts the friction between domestic life and the seductions and demands of art. As they confront an array of common catastrophes-a colicky baby, bedbugs, a faltering marriage, stalled ambitions-the wife analyzes her predicament, invoking everything from Keats and Kafka to the thought experiments of the Stoics to the lessons of doomed Russian cosmonauts. of Speculation, their code name for all the uncertainty that inheres in life and in the strangely fluid confines of a long relationship. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Woolf between the actsThere are few things more prosaic than a discussion of a cesspool, which is how Between the Acts begins. Those last sentences give you some idea of Woolf’s preoccupations. The title of Woolf’s essay ‘Poetry, Fiction and the Future’, published in the New York Herald Tribune in 1927, demonstrates her intense and continuing interest in change and innovation in writing: ‘It may be possible’ she says: How realistic is the idea of a plot, where complex lives and events result in tidy and neat endings? Is life really like that? Such questions provide ways of thinking about Woolf’s own dissatisfactions with fiction, and help to explain why she constantly sought new ways to express what life is.īetween the Acts has so far been referred to as a ‘novel’, but the term is a convenience, used for want of a better word. Such a position seemed too authoritative. As a result, Woolf and other writers like her rejected the kind of third-person narrator who is often also referred to as ‘omniscient’: god-like and all-knowing. In her family that was the norm, but elsewhere too there was a general sense of loss of faith, especially after the First World War. What did Woolf believe? She was brought up to have no conventional religious conviction. 5/12/2023 0 Comments After we fell book series in orderBut now that she has, her life will never be the same.īook Three of the After series-the internet sensation with millions of readers. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her early ambition was to write romantic verse, and she corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. It was Nora’s character development, however, that stole the show for us. As Nora tries out all the different lives she could have lived (Olympic swimmer, rock star, landlady of a country pub, married to her ex etc), she feels frustrated that she can’t seem to find a life she wants to stay in but it was hope for the future rather than frustration at the present that shone through the novel. The book also focusses on one character and one plot, Nora and her life, which means there’s no danger of getting lost in subplots or trying to remember characters’ names (perfect for squinty-eyed evenings).Ībove all, The Midnight Library, is a book of comfort and hope. The Midnight Library captivated us in so many ways and the short, snappy chapters and no-nonsense prose made it one of the most engaging books we’ve read in a long time. If you’re looking for one of those unputdownable books that’s also an easy read, then you’re in the right place. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Freed christian greyAs old rivalries and resentments endanger them both, one misjudgment threatens to tear them apart.
